Motorcycle Sales in 2023
The MCIA (Motorcycle Industry Association) has published their June figures showing the state of motorcycle sales in 2023.
- Mopeds. Overall this category shows as declining by approximately 32% for the year-to-date so far, compared with 2022. But digging into the detail this is largely due to a decline in electric mopeds, possibly due to supply chain problems or manufacturers shipping to other markets. Meanwhile, Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) mopeds show a somewhat lesser decline of 13%.
- Motorcycles. For some years the Adventure motorcycle category was the big seller. Whilst they have maintained a constant 12,000 registrations compared to last year, this year they have been overtaken in numbers by the Naked motorcycle category. It seems a more traditional (and affordable) motorcycle is enjoying a renaissance. The Modern Classic (“retro”) category is always in the motorcycle press with some lovely examples from Kawasaki, Triumph and Royal Enfield and maintains solid sales however, large capacity scooters, although down year on year, is the #2 selling category, suggesting an increase in motorcycles being used for commuting.
So, whilst the early part of the year had seemed slow, motorcycle sales in 2023 are now only down 2.6% compared with 2022.
