Why do we need a driving licence check code?
When you book a CBT or DAS course with 3CMT you will be asked to supply a driving licence check code. So why do we need a driving licence check code, what is it and how do you get one?
Photocard
Your photocard driving licence only provides ID of who you are. You must bring it with you to your CBT or DAS course or your training cannot commence. However, it only lists your full and provisional entitlements to drive different categories of vehicle on the day the photocard was issued. If you have since been banned from driving or hold penalty points we need to determine whether you are legal to ride or not. A motorbike training school is obliged by the DVSA to determine a person’s entitlement to be on the road. We need to do this before your course starts NOT on the first day of training. If you do not provide this information your course cannot start and you will lose all fees paid.
Driving Licence counterpart
The required information used to be documented on the old green driving licence counterpart. This was abolished in June 2015.
DVLA database
The required information is now held electronically by the DVLA. To access this we need your permission.
Obtaining a driving licence check code
Click here to be taken to the gov.uk website.
You’ll need:
- your driving licence number
- your National Insurance number
- the postcode on your driving licence
Once you have entered the information you will get an 8 character code that will look something like this AB cd 12 Xy. Return this code to 3CMT as requested. We will then be able to check your entitlement to ride.
How long is the DVLA check code valid for?
Valid for 21 days after it’s generated.
Can I use a DVLA check code more than once?
No. To protect each driver’s privacy, DVLA codes can only be used once.
How long does it take to access the DVLA check code?
The process should only take around two minutes to complete. However, this will depend on the device you’re using and your internet connection.

Hi. I have an valid EU driving licence and I want to keep it (personal reasons), but I also want to get a driving licence for motorcycles. My question is : can I get a motorcycle driving licence without changing my EU driving licence first? Meaning to have a driving licence for car and a driving licence for motorcycles? Thanks
