How to get a full motorcycle licence?
It can be quite complicated to understand all the steps required to get a full motorcycle licence in the UK. Explanations on the web refer to types of motorcycle, a rider’s age etc etc… The simplest way to break it all down is as follows;
- You need a UK driving licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement.
- If you hold a foreign driving licence read our information here.
- You need to complete a Compulsory Basic Training course. The CBT certificate last 2 years and must still be valid (in date) when you go on to do your MOD 1 and MOD 2 motorcycle tests.
- You train with a motorcycle school on a machine appropriate to your age.
- You also need to pass a motorcycle theory test and be in possession of a valid theory test certificate (it also lasts 2 years) when you go on to do your MOD 1 and MOD 2 motorcycle tests.
- Once trained you can do your MOD 1 motorcycle test.
- On passing the MOD 1 motorcycle test you can do your MOD 2 motorcycle test.
- On passing your MOD 2 motorcycle test you will then hold a full licence for the category of machine you did your test on.
- If you were under 24 years of age on passing your MOD 1 and MOD 2 tests, then when you are old enough to upgrade to a full category A licence you can take another MOD 1 and MOD 2 test on a category A motorcycle.
The above steps can be booked as a complete package with 3CMT here with different options depending on your experience level. If you already have a valid CBT or theory test pass there are also options without those elements.
Here’s the more complicated bit – to understand the different categories of motorcycle that you can ride depending on your age.
- For 17 and 18 year olds you can only ride a category A1 light motorcycle (up to 125cc with a maximum power of 11kW and a power to weight ratio not more than 0.1kW/kg).
- For 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 year olds you can only ride a category A2 motorcycle (power output up to 35kW and power to weight ratio not more than 0.2kW/kg).
- For the practical MOD 1 and MOD 2 tests an A2 motorcycle must be more than 245cc engine size and have between 20kW and 35kW power.
- For 24 year oldd you can ride a full power category A motorcycle.
- For the practical MOD 1 and MOD 2 tests this motorcycle must be more than 595cc and weigh more than 175kg.
