What’s the most popular type of motorbike?
With lots of styles of motorbikes to choose from what is the most popular type of motorbike? The latest motorcycle registration numbers from the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) show that from January to September this year:
- Over 89,552 motorcycles have been registered, a growth of 3.6% over 2021
- The most popular type being scooters (125cc or more) with 21,673 registered
- Naked motorcycles are the most popular “traditional” motorcycle with 19,352 registered
- Then Adventure style motorcycles with 17,731 registered
- The largest growth segment has been in touring motorcycles, though the absolute numbers are much smaller
- Modern Classics are also seeing significant growth compared to last year
The Honda PCX125 is the biggest selling motorbike (537 in September 2022), maybe reflecting a move by car owners to two-wheeled alternatives to save money and time.
The BMW R1250GS Adventure continues to be the biggest selling motorbike (229 registered in September)
Finally there have been 5,367 electric mopeds and motorbikes registered this year so far, the majority being moped equivalents (1-4kW power band)
