Why might a student fail the Mod 2 test?
We always get asked during training why might a student fail the Mod 2 test. The real way of looking at it is to think what you need to do to pass. The full detail of how the Mod 2 test is judged can be found here or in our training material here. To reduce this to the core basics you need to;
- Control your motorcycle at all times
- Obey all traffic laws, signs, road markings
- Make good safe progress
- Anticipate and plan your actions
- Respond safely to the actions of the other road users
We have only had 5 failures this year (so far) but it is worth to see what was the cause in each case and what the student could have done instead.
- Indicator left on after a junction. Student went past another junction with it still on so the examiner had to intervene to remind them.
- What could they have done instead? Remember to cancel indicators.
- Lack of progress in a national speed limit. Even though it was safe to reach 60mph the student barely got up to 40mph.
- What could they have done instead? This was a case of missing the speed sign (even though they had been on that road a few times!) Remember to scan for all road signs regularly.
- Undue hesitation at a roundabout. The student stopped to look for a long time into a clear junction.
- What could they have done instead? This is something to really iron out during training in a student’s planning and anticipation process on the approach to junctions.
- Failed to stop at a stop sign.
- What could they have done instead? Scan for all road signs on the approach to junctions.
- Went straight ahead exit 2 at a roundabout from a left turn only lane. Student knew they were in the wrong lane.
- What could they have done instead? Gone left! The examiner would have worked out where to go after that to return to the test route.
